The Tony and Betty Sieler Memorial Scholarship was established to honor the lives, values, and legacy of Tony and Betty Sieler. Throughout their lives, they demonstrated a strong work ethic, a commitment to serving others, and a belief that success is achieved through perseverance, dependability, and a willingness to embrace challenges. This scholarship is awarded to a second-year Precision Agriculture student who exemplifies the qualities that Tony and Betty encouraged in their family and community. Candidates should demonstrate hard work, reliability, and the determination to see projects and responsibilities through to completion. Preference will be given to students who willingly accept challenges, think creatively to solve problems, and use their talents and abilities to help others succeed. Precision Agriculture continues to evolve through innovation, adaptability, and service. This scholarship seeks to recognize students who not only excel in their studies but also embody the character, initiative, and commitment that Tony and Betty believed were essential to making a positive difference in the lives of others. This scholarship reflects the Van Buskirk family’s commitment to strengthening the skilled trades workforce in South Dakota and the region. Applicants must maintain a minimum GPA of 3.0 and demonstrate a history of community involvement. Preference may be given to students who express a commitment or strong interest in remaining in South Dakota after graduation. Carroll Hunstad Family Memorial Scholarship for Current Students

The Carroll Hunstad Family Memorial Scholarship honors the life and legacy of Carroll Marvin Hunstad, a devoted U.S. Navy veteran, educator, and pioneer in technical education whose commitment to service, craftsmanship, and community left a lasting impact. After graduating from Aberdeen High School in 1945, Carroll served nine years in the Navy during World War II and the Korean War before returning to South Dakota to build a career in the heating and refrigeration industry, becoming a charter member of the Aberdeen Regional Refrigeration Engineers Society. In 1975, he moved to Mitchell to establish and develop the Heating and Air Conditioning Program at Mitchell Tech, where he served as the founding instructor and department head until his retirement in 1992, mentoring generations of students and setting high standards for technical excellence and professional integrity. Carroll lived a life grounded in faith, leadership, and dedication to family. This scholarship supports students pursuing a career in Heating & Cooling Technology and maintain a 2.5 GPA or higher.

Brenda and John Janssen

The Brenda and John Janssen Scholarship was established in 2026 to honor their dedication and commitment to supporting future generations of students at Mitchell Technical College. Brenda previously served as an instructor in Mitchell Tech’s Medical Laboratory Technology Program where she shared her knowledge and experience with aspiring professionals. John has also been a long-time supporter of Mitchell Tech’s agricultural students, beginning with his career at John Deere and provided advisory support to these programs. Together, Brenda and John have demonstrated a strong belief in education, hands-on learning, and the importance of investing in students as they prepare to enter the workforce. These scholarships are awarded to second-year, full-time students pursuing a degree in Medical Laboratory Technology or an agricultural-related program, continuing the Janssens’ legacy of encouragement and investment in future generations. Preference is given to students from the Bridgewater-Emery School District, followed by students from the Hanson then McCook Central School Districts.

Roger Carlson “Tough Old Bird” Endowed Scholarship

The endowment was established in 2013 by the family and friends of longtime Mithell Tech Ag instructor Roger Carlson. Carlson began his career at Mitchell Tech in August, 1990, and was a valued member of the Ag Technology department until May, 2011, when health problems forced his retirement. Carlson passed away on August 27, 2012 from complications related to leukemia. The endowment began providing scholarships in the 2013-14 school year to a qualifying student in the Ag Technology, Architecture Design and Building Construction or Farm Power Technology programs. The scholarship will be awarded in January each year and applied to the recipient’s account the following Fall semester.

Rick Kostelecky Endowed Scholarship

The endowed scholarship was established by the family of Rick Kostelecky, a 1982 graduate of the Electrical Construction and Maintenance program. Kostelecky began his career with Muth Electric in Watertown and Rapid City. In 1993, he joined Interstates Electric Engineering, where he traveled nationwide as a project foreman. He rejoined Muth Electric in 2004 and settled in the Black Hills. Rick passed away in August, 2012. The endowment began providing scholarships in the 2013-2014 school year. The scholarships will be awarded in January each year and applied to the recipient’s account the following Fall semester.

Reyher / Harris Memorial Scholarship

The Reyher/Harris Memorial Scholarship was established in 2019 by Seth and Cheryl Weeman in memory of U.S. Navy Divers James Reyher and Ryan Harris, who made the ultimate sacrifice for their country while conducting military diving operations on February 26, 2013. Teammates to the end, Reyher and Harris personified the values of courage and commitment, always displaying a “can do” attitude that enabled them to accomplish any goal they set out to achieve.
This scholarship will be awarded to any second year student enrolled in a program leading to the receival of an Associate’s Degree as well as any student enrolled in the Licensed Practical Nursing, Power Line, GPS/GIS and Electrical Utilities and Substation programs. Applicant must maintain a 3.0 GPA. Academic performance, financial need and instructor recommendations will also be considered. Students receiving Build Dakota scholarships, involved in a Double Edge or Workforce Recruitment program, or receiving full GI Bill of Rights will not be eligible for this scholarship. Applicant must complete the MTC Online application to be eligible to receive this scholarship.

Long-time former Paulson Sheet Metal owners Chuck and Lois Paulson and their son Scott, present owner of Paulson Air, established the endowment to support recruitment scholarships for students enrolled in the Heating and Cooling Technology program. The scholarships will be awarded to students who meet the listed criteria applied to the recipient’s account for the Fall semester. The Incoming student awards will be announced by August 1 and applied to the recipient’s account for the Fall semester and in January for Current students and applied to their accounts the following Fall semester.

Out of love he he crafted his grandchildren wooden cradles when they were babies to sleep in. Another talent Norman had was refinishing furniture. Norman was a US Postal Service mail carrier here in Mitchell for 32 years. After Norman passed away in April of 2022 his family established this scholarship for a second year student in the Electrical Construction & Maintenance program.

Mark And Kathy Hofer Endowed Power Line Technology Scholarship

Mark and Kathy Hofer are avid supporters of Mitchell Tech’s Power Line and Construction program. Mark has served on various electric cooperative boards for several years both on a local and national level. The Hofer’s have sponsored this scholarship since 2007 and created an endowed fund in 2014 to support the Power Line Scholarship and Wind Turbine Technology Scholarship. The Power Line award recipient will be selected by the SD Line Superintendents from applications provided by the Mitchell Technical College Foundation from those received during their Fall application period. The scholarship will be awarded at the beginning of the second semester each year and applied to the recipient’s account the same semester.
