A skilled Medical Office Professional is an invaluable asset to any medical office, working effectively with medical professionals and patients while performing assorted office duties. With the number of healthcare procedures escalating every year as the population ages, there’s a high demand for skilled specialists in patient information technology and medical billing and reimbursement. Medical Office Professionals (MOP) are the experts on patient data that doctors, nurses and other providers rely on to perform their jobs.

Requirements
Admission Requirements: All students accepted to the ONLINE Medical Office Professional program must submit to a criminal background check at the student’s expense. Mitchell Technical College has partnered with CastleBranch to complete your background check. You will need to create a username and password. Details are available from the Admissions office. Please click here to begin the process.
Program Graduation Requirement: Students must earn a grade of C or higher in all technical courses as a prerequisite to MOP 290. Students must earn a grade of C (2.0) or higher in their clinical internship in order to graduate. Students must also complete a basic life support course (CPR/First Aid) and provide proof of certification in order to graduate.
Computer Requirements: Computer and Internet access required. (Your computer will have to meet our specifications to assure your operating system and software are current and compatible.)
Outcomes
At the completion of the program, graduates will be able to:
- Manage front office duties such as reception, record maintenance and bookkeeping.
- Competently use medical terminology required in medical correspondence, preparing forms, documents, and transcribed material.
- Correctly use software applications to manage records and data electronically.
- Demonstrate proficiency in computerized billing by entering and/or processing medical insurance claims.
- Accurately convert diagnoses, injury and procedure descriptions documented in patient records into numeric or alphanumeric codes using coding manuals (CPT and ICD-10-CM).
- Analyze patient charts to assign codes that ensure the healthcare provider is properly reimbursed for services.
- Demonstrate effective communication and interpersonal skills when working with clients, coworkers, and physicians.
- Demonstrate a thorough understanding of the legal and ethical standards and dilemmas facing the medical profession.
- Interpret dictation completely and accurately using skills of listening, comprehension, editing, and clarifying with the ability to identify inconsistencies.

South Dakota Wheat Commission
The South Dakota Wheat Commission began offering scholarships for Culinary Academy of South Dakota, Animal Science, Ag Business, Agronomy, Precision Technology, and SD Center for Farm and Ranch Management program students in 2014.
The Commission has been an active supporter of several Mitchell Technical College programs for several years and has provided financial support for equipment and program development.

Applicants must be currently enrolled as first year full-time students in the Culinary Academy of South Dakota or Agronomy programs, with second choice being Ag Business, Animal Science or Precision Technology

Applicant must maintain a GPA of 2.5 or higher
Award considerations include academic performance, financial need, responses to essay questions and recommendations from instructors.
Ag award preference would be to someone who comes from or has plans to go into production agriculture, specifically wheat production
Culinary Academy of South Dakota award preference would be students interested in the baking side of the program

Osterhaus Endowed Scholarships
Martin and Maude Osterhaus established this endowed scholarship in 1995 to provide financial support for at least four deserving Mitchell Tech students each year.
The scholarships will be awarded in January each year and applied to the recipient's account the following Fall semester.

John And Diane Weber “Career Change” Endowed Scholarship
John and Diane Weber Family and Friends
This scholarship was established in 2015 by the daughters of Diane Weber, wife of former Culinary Academy of South Dakota instructor and Mitchell Tech alum, John Weber. Diane's early adult years were spent in the Peace Corp, working at Bell Telephone and teaching German and English after college. The scholarship honors Diane's desire in 1974 to change her career and her enrollment at Mitchell Tech to become a Clinical Lab Technician. While attending Mitchell Tech she met John, completed her education, and then spent several years working as a Clinical Lab Technician.
The scholarships will be awarded in January each year and applied to the recipient's account the following Fall semester.
