Interstates Endowed Scholarships

Interstates, Sioux Center, Iowa, has been a great industry partner of Mitchell Tech. Interstates began offering scholarships to ECM students in 2004 and their Endowment achieved full funding in 2012. The scholarships will be awarded in January each year and applied to the recipient’s account the following Fall semester.

Home Builders Of The Sioux Empire Scholarships

Home Builders of the Sioux Empire has been offering scholarships to Architectural Design and Building Construction students since 2003. The scholarships awarded to Current student recipients will have funds applied to their accounts the Fall semester of their second year. The scholarships will be selected by a committee comprised of ADBC instructors and Mitchell Tech staff.
Architectural Design and Building Construction
Scholarships will be awarded in September to students currently enrolled as full-time second year Architectural and Building Construction students. La Societe des Quarante Hommes et Huit Chevaux (The Society of Forty Men and Eight Horses), is an independent, invitation only, honor society of American veterans and service members; more commonly known as The Forty and Eight. The Forty and Eight is committed to charitable and patriotic aims. Our purpose is to uphold and defend the Constitution of the United States, to promote the well-being of veterans, their widows, widowers and orphans, and to actively participate in selected charitable endeavors, which include programs that promote child welfare and nurses training. The titles and symbols of The Forty and Eight are derived from the experiences of U.S. troops during World War I. American soldiers were transported to the front on the French rail system. Cramped into narrow gauge boxcars, each stenciled with “40 Hommes/8 Chevaux”, denoting its capacity to hold either 40 men or 8 horses. The Forty and Eight was founded in 1920 by American veterans returning from France. Originally an arm of the American Legion, the Forty and Eight became an independent and separately incorporated veteran’s organization in 1960. 2 scholarships for LPN program. 2 scholarships for LPN to RN.

Dennis Merchant Endowed Scholarship

The endowment was established in 2012 by the family of former MTC Power Line instructor, Dennis Merchant. Merchant spent his entire working career in the power line industry and taught the Power Line Technology program at Mitchell Tech from 1974 to 1988. He and his wife Dorothy then made their business, Merchant Job Training and Safety Program, their priority. Merchant passed away in February, 2012. His family continues to run this business, now located in Brookings, SD. The scholarship will be announced in January each year and applied to the recipient’s account the Spring semester.

Dennis Knouse Memorial Scholarship

The fund was established in 2013 by family, friends and co-workers of Dennis Knouse. Knouse was a 1979 Electrical Construction and Maintenance graduate from Huron, SD who died in a motorcycle accident in 2010. Funds for the scholarships are provided by a Poker Run held each summer. The scholarship will be awarded in January each year and applied to the recipient’s account the following Fall semester.

Daniel Roy Todd, son of native Letcher, SD parents, returned to his family roots in 1998 to care for his father and in August, 2001 he accepted the position of Executive Director of the recently-established Mitchell Technical College Foundation. Dan’s varied experiences in research, planning, consulting, and community development allowed him to focus on strategic planning for the Mitchell Technical College Foundation. In a very short time he had established the Mitchell Technical College Alumni Association and provided an excellent base upon which the Foundation was built. Dan passed away in 2005 after a brief illness but the Mitchell Technical College Foundation still credits him with the early success of the organization. The Daniel Roy Todd Fund began providing scholarships in 2016.

Dakotas Chapter NECA Endowed Scholarship

The Dakotas Chapter of the National Electrical Contractors Association (NECA), based in Fargo, ND, was founded in 1949 and is one of 117 NECA chapters nationwide. It promotes and advances the interests of 40 electrical contractors in the Dakotas and western Minnesota. NECA contractor electricians are all members of the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers. This endowment was created in 2014. The scholarships will be awarded in January each year and applied to the second year student recipient accounts for their second semester. The first year student awards will be applied the following Fall semester.

Cadden J. Burgess Memorial Powerline Scholarship

Cadden grew up in Rapid City and graduated from Stevens High School in 2011. He attended MTC and graduated from the Powerline program in 2014. Being Cadden was so full of life, he always pushed it to the limit. After graduating from MTC he worked for Forbes (previously Timberline) and later moved to Altitude. During his time at Forbes, he successfully completed his Journeyman courses from Northwest Lineman College. Cadden was the first employee from Forbes to complete the Journeyman courses and traveled extensively with work and loved it. Cadden at the age of 27 died unexpectedly of a heart condition in Gillette, Wyoming.

While at Mitchell Tech, Brian developed a fondness and respect for the unique talents of his schoolmates in the Culinary Arts program, and friendships emerged. Brian went on to a successful career in the energy industry. He passed away December 31, 2013. In recognition of Brian’s soft spot for the Culinary Arts program his father, David Zambo, has established this scholarship in his memory. Black Hills Energy and the Black Hills Corporation have been recorded supporters of the Mitchell Technical College’s Energy programs with cash donations, various pieces of equipment and supplies for students, and provided scholarship funding the Mitchell Technical College Alumni Association Golf Tournament since 2012.

The applicant must be a fulltime student enrolled in the Power Line Construction and Maintenance program. The applicant must maintain a GPA of 3.0 or higher. First preference will go to applicants from the Black Hills Energy electric service territory area: Pennington, Meade, Lawrence, Custer, Butte and Fall River counties or Weston County Wyoming. Ag Memorial Endowed Scholarship

During the course of MTC’s history, MTC instructors, students, alumni and family have established scholarship funds in memory of Ag students, alumni or Ag Board members. B.J. Stoeser – was a 1982 graduate of the Ag program and was killed in a car accident in October, 1987. He was remembered as tough, enthusiastic and persistent with excellent leadership skills. Bryan Larson – was a 1981 graduate of the Ag program. Dennis Boehmer – attended the Ag program in 1980-81. He succumbed to cancer between his first and second year of school. Topper Largent -was an Ag Advisory Board member. Largent was killed in a plane crash near Hot Springs, SD.
