A skilled Medical Office Professional is an invaluable asset to any medical office, working effectively with medical professionals and patients while performing assorted office duties. With the number of healthcare procedures escalating every year as the population ages, there’s a high demand for skilled specialists in patient information technology and medical billing and reimbursement. Medical Office Professionals (MOP) are the experts on patient data that doctors, nurses and other providers rely on to perform their jobs.
Medical records and health information technology professionals can expect to be in high demand in the health sector during the next 20 to 30 years. In fact, the Bureau of Labor Statistics projects health information technology will be one of the 20 fastest growing occupations in the U.S.

ADMISSION REQUIREMENTS
All students accepted to the ONLINE Medical Office Professional program must submit to a criminal background check at the student’s expense. Mitchell Technical College has partnered with CastleBranch to complete your background check. You will need to create a username and password. Details are available from the Admissions office. PROGRAM GRADUATION REQUIREMENTS
Students must earn a grade of C or higher in all technical courses as a prerequisite to MOP 290. Students must also complete a basic life support course (CPR/First Aid) and provide proof of certification in order to graduate.
COMPUTER REQUIREMENTS
Computer and Internet access required. (Your computer will have to meet our specifications to assure your operating system and software are current and compatible.)
Outcomes
At the completion of the program, graduates will be able to:
- Apply medical law, ethics, and HIPAA regulations in medical office practice
- Communicate effectively with patients, providers, and healthcare team members using professional standards
- Manage administrative medical office functions using electronic health record (EHR) systems
- Evaluate insurance information to verify eligibility and process billing that supports medical necessity
- Assign accurate CPT, ICD-10-CM, and HCPCS codes based on provider documentation

This scholarship is given in recognition of the students at Mitchell Technical College who are both furthering their education with the intention of serving in a medical field in the future and who are presently working at Mitchell’s Firesteel Healthcare Center. This scholarship is established to show gratitude to Firesteel Healthcare Center and its employees for the care and compassion that they showed to our mother Georgia Gross for the many years that she was a resident there. The purpose of this award is to ease the financial burden of MTC students who are committing their careers to health services and caregiver fields.

Diane’s early adult years were spent in the Peace Corp, working at Bell Telephone and teaching German and English after college. The scholarship honors Diane’s desire in 1974 to change her career and her enrollment at Mitchell Tech to become a Clinical Lab Technician.

Daniel Roy Todd, son of native Letcher, SD parents, returned to his family roots in 1998 to care for his father and in August, 2001 he accepted the position of Executive Director of the recently-established Mitchell Technical College Foundation. Dan’s varied experiences in research, planning, consulting, and community development allowed him to focus on strategic planning for the Mitchell Technical College Foundation. In a very short time he had established the Mitchell Technical College Alumni Association and provided an excellent base upon which the Foundation was built.
Dan passed away in 2005 after a brief illness but the Mitchell Technical College Foundation still credits him with the early success of the organization.
The Daniel Roy Todd Fund began providing scholarships in 2016.

The funding for this scholarship is provided by the contributions to the Mitchell Technical College Foundation by the staff and faculty of Mitchell Technical College.
