The Business Management program provides broad, practical training in the core areas of business that employers value most, including sales, marketing, advertising, insurance, investments, human resources, customer relations, and business operations. Through hands-on projects and real-world scenarios, you’ll develop the leadership, communication, and analytical skills needed to make informed decisions, solve problems, manage projects, and plan for organizational success.

Whether your goal is to lead a team, start your own business, or advance within an existing organization, a Business Management degree opens the door to careers across nearly every industry. Graduates find opportunities in retail, banking, insurance, financial services, healthcare, manufacturing, hospitality, nonprofit organizations, and many other business sectors.

Technology is integrated throughout the program to prepare you for today’s digital workplace. Students complete a combination of face-to-face and hybrid courses, providing flexibility while maintaining valuable in-person instruction and collaboration. This program is not currently offered as a fully online program.

ACCT110 > Principles of Accounting IProvides knowledge of fundamental accounting standards, concepts and practices utilized in the preparation and analysis of financial reports for non-corporate and corporate business entities. Topics include business transactions and accounting records, the accounting cycle, financial statements, internal controls, current assets and liabilities, fixed assets and depreciation. Minimum “C” grade required.4 credits

BUS101 > Introduction to BusinessA survey of the business world covering business terminology, concepts and current business issues. The student will develop a business vocabulary, foster critical and analytical thinking and refine business decision-making skills. A major goal of this course is to help students become citizens who can contribute and compete in an increasingly global business environment. This course serves as a foundation for additional business subjects.3 credits

BUS143 > Document ProductionThis course will introduce word processing skills that can be combined with students’ basic skills to create complex documents. Students will utilize Microsoft Word to create and format documents and tables; create mail merges, macros, templates and fill-in forms; set and manipulate tabs; insert charts, graphics and hyperlinks; and import and export data. Students will also look at different ways of sharing documents with others. This course will help prepare the student for the Microsoft Word certification exam.3 credits

SSS100 > Student SuccessProvides a foundation for gaining the knowledge, skills and attitudes necessary for college success. Students will learn to make a successful transition to higher education by setting up a pattern of success that will last the rest of their lives. Students will define goals and develop thinking skills, learning strategies and personal qualities essential to both academic and career success.1 credit

Introduction to the marketing environment, as well as the different aspects of the marketing mix: products, price, promotion and distribution, is presented.3 credits

BUS204 > Customer ServiceCustomer service is a critical element in the success and future of all businesses that compete in today’s economy. It is more challenging than ever to attract and retain customers because more companies are competing for the same customer. This course is a study of issues in the workplace relating to effective customer service and emphasizes three different aspects of customer service: the profession, skills for success, and building and maintaining relationships. Through role play scenarios, collaborative learning activities, and application of concepts to real-world situations, students are introduced to the issues of ethics, problem solving, strategy implementation, empowerment, communications, motivation and leadership necessary for the delivery of exceptional customer service and customer retention.3 credits

BUS170 > Entrepreneurship Small Bus MgtIn this course, students will learn about the challenges of entrepreneurship, different options for opening a business, how to write a business plan of their own, marketing issues and how to create a successful financial plan. Students will gain the tools to launch a new venture and the knowledge for entrepreneurial success.3 credits

BUS246 > Digital MarketingThis course explores the ever-changing world of social media and its impact on the business world. Students will explore emerging social media technologies and study their application in contemporary practice. Through hands-on learning, students will design, implement and measure a digital marketing strategy for a business while participating in social networks, forums, blogs, wikis, micro-blogs and more.3 credits

CMST101 > Foundations of CommunicationsStudents will develop critical thinking and communication skills through speaking across a variety of genres, with an emphasis on adapting messages to different audiences, purposes, and contexts. Using a process-based approach, students will learn to plan, practice, deliver, and evaluate speeches. They will also develop skills in providing constructive feedback to others and thoughtfully incorporating feedback into their own work. Through these experiences, students will strengthen their ability to communicate ideas effectively and respond confidently in academic, professional, and real-world settings.3 credits

CIS107 > Spreadsheet ConceptsDetailed instruction on the use of Microsoft Excel covering beginning, intermediate, and advanced concepts. Concepts covered include working with formulas and functions; creating and formatting charts graphs and pivot tables/pivot charts; sorting and filtering lists; data consolidation between multiple worksheets and workbooks; and importing and exporting of data.3 credits

BUS210 > Principles of SellingPrinciples of selling and skills required by today’s sales and marketing professional. Students will develop a variety of skills including communication, critical thinking, building relationships with customers, and ethical decision making. This course introduces advertising via all media – print, digital, video, TV, Internet, etc., as well as consumer behavior and contemporary media issues.3 credits

BUS217 > Database ApplicationsThis course provides detailed instruction on the use of Microsoft Access covering introductory, intermediate, and advanced concepts. Proper procedures for designing and administering a database suitable for both professional purposes and personal use will be explored. Concepts covered include importing and exporting data, working with tables, queries, forms, reports, and data macros. Students are exposed to practical examples showcasing Access as a useful tool. Students will discover the underlying functionality of Access allowing them to become more productive.3 credits

The Mitchell Technical College business management program, offered for the AAS degree, is a candidate for accreditation by the Accreditation Council for Business Schools & Programs.

ACBSP Standard 7 requires that the business unit have a systematic process to identify and track key student performance measures for the purpose of of continuous improvement.

In memory of Lisa Marie Jolliff, her family is honored to establish the Lisa Jolliff Memorial Scholarship for a student attending Mitchell Technical College. Lisa was a caring, giving, loyal, reliable, genuine, and hardworking person. She believed in doing things the right way, keeping her word, helping others, and giving her best in everything she did. She was someone people could count on, and her kindness and genuine concern for others left a lasting impression on everyone fortunate enough to know her. Lisa was a loving daughter, sister, wife, mother, grandmother, friend, and dedicated member of her community. Her family wanted to find a meaningful way to honor her life and the qualities she represented. Through this scholarship, we hope to continue the spirit of giving that was such an important part of who Lisa was. Rod Bowar Memorial Scholarship

Rod owned Kennebec Telephone Company, providers of telephone, cable TV and internet service to Kennebec, Presho and rural Lyman County. He joined the company in 1977 and purchased it in 1998. Rod was passionate about providing the best opportunities possible for his family and community. He served on many different boards and committees, including serving on the Mitchell Technical College Foundation Board. Two of Rod’s children were Mitchell Tech grads, and his businesses employ multiple Mitchell Tech graduates.

This scholarship was established in 2015 by the daughters of Diane Weber. Diane’s early adult years were spent in the Peace Corp, working at Bell Telephone and teaching German and English after college. The scholarship honors Diane’s desire in 1974 to change her career and her enrollment at Mitchell Tech to become a Clinical Lab Technician. Plagmann Family Scholarship

Established in 2011, the Plagmann Family Scholarship honors Gary and Sheryl Plagmann and their lasting dedication to their professions and to Mitchell Technical College. Gary Plagmann devoted nearly 40 years to the telecommunications industry across South Dakota, Iowa, and Minnesota, playing a key role in numerous rural telephone company upgrades throughout his career. Sheryl Plagmann, a 1970 graduate of Mitchell Technical College, returned to the college in 2009 to work with the Mitchell Technical College Foundation where she served through 2025 in support of students and the Mitchell Tech’s mission. This scholarship is awarded to a full-time student in their final year within the Wi-Fi & Broadband Technology, Accounting, Business Management, or Social Services program who maintains a GPA of 2.5 or higher.

Daniel Roy Todd Memorial Scholarship

Daniel Roy Todd, son of native Letcher, SD parents, returned to his family roots in 1998 to care for his father and in August, 2001 he accepted the position of Executive Director of the recently-established Mitchell Technical College Foundation. Dan’s varied experiences in research, planning, consulting, and community development allowed him to focus on strategic planning for the Mitchell Technical College Foundation. In a very short time he had established the Mitchell Technical College Alumni Association and provided an excellent base upon which the Foundation was built. Dan passed away in 2005 after a brief illness but the Mitchell Technical College Foundation still credits him with the early success of the organization. The Daniel Roy Todd Fund began providing scholarships in 2016.

The Vickers Family Scholarship

The Vickers Family Scholarship was established in 2022. Chad Vickers graduated from the Computer Systems Technology program in 1996. His brother, Austin Vickers, graduated from the Power Line Construction and Maintenance program in 2009 and Chad and Jennifer’s son, Jude Vickers, graduated from the Business Management program in 2021. The Vickers Family attributes much of their life successes to the education they received from Mitchell Tech. This scholarship is for incoming students in either the Business Management, SCADA/ Automation Controls, or Power Line Construction and Maintenance program and is awarded for the Fall semester.

These scholarships are provided to full-time Incoming students enrolled at Mitchell Tech. The funding for this scholarship is provided by the contributions to the Mitchell Technical College Foundation by the staff and faculty of Mitchell Technical College. Recipients will be notified of awards mid-summer. All awards will be credited to student accounts for the Fall semester.
