Technicians in the fast-growing occupation of outdoor power sports are in demand all across the country. The last two decades have seen an increase in the number of recreational vehicles in households and businesses: motorcycles, snowmobiles, ATVs, four-wheelers, boats and more.

Students will get experience learning service and repair of these high-powered machines in Mitchell Tech’s state-of-the-art laboratories.   

An optional second year is offered.  Students who complete the second year will earn an AAS degree and will receive enhanced training in areas like marine engines, jet skis and other personal watercraft, metal fabrication, paint and detailing, supervision and management and more.  With two years of training, students will have even more opportunities in this exciting field.

Many dealerships in the region will offer supervised job shadowing and internship experiences. Employment opportunities can be found in many areas including dealership sales and service, cycle builders and manufacturers, ag maintenance shops and various other locations.

Outcomes

Outdoor Power & Recreational Vehicle Technology
At the completion of the program, graduates will be able to:

  • Apply safe, efficient and effective work practices in a manner compatible with OSHA requirements and motorcycle, ATV, and small engine repair industry expectations.
  • Demonstrate the effective use of internet-based resources, industry repair manuals, and service and parts literature in the repair and maintenance of motorcycle, ATV, outboard, and small engine equipment.
  • Demonstrate the industry-standard application of selected specialized tools for motorcycle, ATV, outboard, and small engine maintenance, diagnostic, repair tools, and equipment.
  • Identify the components and their function among motorcycle, ATV, and small engine equipment.
  • Apply preventative maintenance concepts to motorcycle, ATV, small engine care and storage.
  • Demonstrate basic diagnostic and repair concepts applied to selected motorcycle engine, ATV engine, small engine, marine engine, equipment power train and chassis systems.
  • Interact effectively by displaying flexibility, honesty, teamwork, respect, and sensitivity for customers.
  • Communicate effectively through active listening and oral, written, and electronic format with customers, coworkers, and supervisors.
  • Assume responsibility for continuing education requirements for new technologies and career advancement.

John And Diane Weber “Career Change” Endowed Scholarship

John and Diane Weber Family and Friends

This scholarship was established in 2015 by the daughters of Diane Weber, wife of former Culinary Academy of South Dakota instructor and Mitchell Tech alum, John Weber. Diane’s early adult years were spent in the Peace Corp, working at Bell Telephone and teaching German and English after college. The scholarship honors Diane’s desire in 1974 to change her career and her enrollment at Mitchell Tech to become a Clinical Lab Technician. While attending Mitchell Tech she met John, completed her education, and then spent several years working as a Clinical Lab Technician. The scholarships will be awarded in January each year and applied to the recipient’s account the following Fall semester.

Daniel Roy Todd Memorial Scholarship

Daniel Todd Family

Daniel Roy Todd, son of native Letcher, SD parents, returned to his family roots in 1998 to care for his father and in August, 2001 he accepted the position of Executive Director of the recently-established Mitchell Technical College Foundation. Dan’s varied experiences in research, planning, consulting, and community development allowed him to focus on strategic planning for the Mitchell Technical College Foundation. In a very short time he had established the Mitchell Technical College Alumni Association and provided an excellent base upon which the Foundation was built. Dan passed away in 2005 after a brief illness but the Mitchell Technical College Foundation still credits him with the early success of the organization. The Daniel Roy Todd Fund began providing scholarships in 2016.
