High School Welding Competition
The Welding Engineering Technology program at Mitchell Technical College invites high school juniors and seniors to test their skills at our welding competition and compete for prizes donated by industry partners.

1800 E. Spruce Street, Mitchell, SD 57301
- Only the first 100 applicants will be accepted for competition.
- Welders’ knowledge exam and visual/tensile strength will determine placement.
- Exam will be taken online, administered by the applicants CTE instructor between October 28-30, 2026.
- Top 10 scores of the knowledge exam and visual weld combined will advance to the tensile strength test for final contest placement.
- Participants are welcome to bring their own welding equipment. If not, equipment will be provided.
- Choose GMAW or SMAW process. Only provided filler metal is allowed.
- Door prizes will be given throughout the competition.
- Compete in the state’s #1 manufacturing training facility; facility tours given.
- Judges are industry professionals.
- Learn about free tuition opportunities for the Welding Engineering Technology, Machining & Manufacturing, and Utilities Pipeline Technology programs at Mitchell Technical College.
- Lunch and a light breakfast will be provided.
- If rescheduled due to weather, the event will be moved to November 20, 2026.
