Question:  _ What is the difference between a Diploma and an AAS degree? 
Answer:
 
  Students enrolled in the diploma track are required to take 10 credits of General Education courses, whereas those students pursuing an AAS degree are required to take 16 credits.

 
Question:   What are the benefits of a technical school versus a 4-year university?
Answer:






  · Smaller classrooms
· Smaller faculty to student ratio
· More hands-on “technical” experience
· Only required to take General Education courses that apply to his or her career choice
· Better employment rates
· Degrees can be earned in two years or less
· Less total cost because you spend less time in school
     
Question:

If there is an emergency and I can’t reach my student, who do I call?
Answer:


  Call the Student Services office at (605) 995-3023.  They will be able to assist you in finding your student and delivering your message.  Regular office hours during the Fall and Spring semesters are from 8:00 a.m. - 5:00 p.m. Monday through Friday.  Summer hours are from 7:30 a.m. - 4:00 p.m.

 
Question:

  I am paying for my student’s education and would like to see his/her grades.  Can you send me a

grade report?

Answer:



  Under the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act of 1974 (FERPA), MTI is only allowed to release grade reports or records to parents whose students have signed a written consent form.  See the FERPA link for more information.  A student's grade report may be viewed in the MyMTI portal with the student's login information.  No grade reports are sent via postal service.
     
Question:
  How do students receive their financial aid?
Answer:

 
  Pell Grants, Perkins Student Loans, Supplemental Educational Opportunity Grants (SEOG), MTI/Other Scholarships and Stafford Student Loans are applied directly to the student’s account for tuition and fees only.  Please keep in mind that your student is responsible for paying for his or her books, tools and supplies when purchased. Question:   Where can I find information on student part-time employment?
Answer:



  Contact MTI’s Career Services Coordinator to learn about part-time positions in the Mitchell and surrounding areas. A listing of part-time positions may be viewed at any time by utilizing the Career Services Online Employment Listing. Additionally, the Financial Aid office can provide opportunities regarding on campus work study positions. The South Dakota Department of Labor Office located at 1321 N. Main St. in Mitchell is also a valuable resource.
     
Question:
  What are the housing options for my student? Do you have residence halls?
Answer:




 
  There are now student apartments available as a housing option for MTI students.  Campus Tech Apartments near the MTI Technology Center, opened in August 2011. More information including floor plans and application with FAQs is available from Mills Property Management.

The Admissions office at MTI will provide students with a list of additional housing options in the Mitchell area at their request.  You can also find a list of available housing on the MTI website.

   
Question:   What is the placement rate for programs at MTI?
Answer:

  According to the follow-up report that was conducted for our 2012 graduates, 98% of them are employed. Considering the state of the national economy, MTI is proud that new graduates remain competitive.

  What activities are available for my son or daughter to participate in?
Answer:












 
  Several clubs are offered which encourage leadership development and participation. These include:

· Student Representative Board

· Skills USA

· Student Veteran’s Organization

· Cru (Campus Crusade for Christ)

· Intercollegiate Rodeo

· Intercollegiate Archery
· Intramural Sports including women’s volleyball, men’s basketball, flag football, trap shooting and bowling. 

These clubs provide many activities for MTI students throughout the school year including dances, bowling parties, picnics and more.

 

All students receive a FREE membership to the Mitchell Recreation Center as long as they are enrolled at MTI.

 
   
Question:   Will my son or daughter receive individualized attention from the instructors?
Answer:





  At MTI, the student to faculty ratio is 18 to 1. In addition to relatively small class sizes, instructors have posted office hours indicating when students can speak with them one on one.  Instructors encourage students to talk to them individually when they need help.

 

Each student will also be assigned an academic advisor, typically an instructor in their program, who will meet with them periodically to assess their progress in the program, as well as addressing any needs the student may have.

     
Question:   Does MTI provide insurance for my son or daughter while he or she is attending MTI?
Answer:






  For all students, good health is essential to achieving educational goals. Without adequate coverage, unexpected medical expenses could alter a future dramatically. It is recommended that all of our students have health insurance while attending MTI. Health insurance is a requirement for the Radiological Technology and Radiation Therapy students.  Mitchell Technical Institute does not carry insurance for students who may be injured while attending courses and participating in lab activities. If your student is covered under your insurance policy you may want to check with your provider to see what requirements they have for him/her to stay covered while in college.  Dropping classes or withdrawing from school can have an impact on insurance coverage.
