MTI Students Compete at State Contest

Sioux Falls—A total of 38 Mitchell Technical Institute students participated in the recent SkillsUSA State Leadership and Skills Conference (SLSC) competition held April 12-13 at Southeast Technical Institute in Sioux Falls.  The SLSC championships event is for high school and college-level students who are members of SkillsUSA.  The annual conference was a showcase of career and technical education students where more than 275 outstanding career and technical education students competed hands-on in 42 different trade, technical and leadership fields.

MTI won a total of eleven gold medals, ten silver and two bronze.  Many winners also received prizes such as tools of their trades and scholarships to further their careers and education.

According to MTI SkillsUSA advisor Jason Juhnke, “We are very proud of our students’ accomplishments.  By showing dedication to excellence in occupational and leadership skills, MTI’s SkillsUSA chapter and the other students who participated in the competition are true ‘champions at work.’”

During the SkillsUSA competition, students competed against the clock and each other, proving their expertise in dozens of occupations. All contests are run with the help of industry, trade associations and labor organizations, with testing competencies set by industry. In addition, leadership contestants demonstrated their skills, which included extemporaneous speaking and conducting meetings by parliamentary procedure.

Gold medalists earn the right to compete at the SkillsUSA Championships in Louisville, KY, June 25-29,2018.
