Great River Energy is seeking a transmission substation construction and maintenance planner to analyze and manage the conditioned based maintenance program for transmission substations and associated equipment to ensure on-site equipment is properly maintained for reliability and NERC compliance. The person utilizes different inputs including field testing data, along with other data analytic tools to help in the prioritization process for rating of substation apparatus equipment. Provide expertise and/or assistance to substation apparatus staff relating to construction and maintenance activities which have a direct impact to GRE’s conditioned based maintenance program.


  • Manage condition based maintenance program for transmission substations and associated type equipment to maximize reliability, staff efficiency, and provide overall cost savings.
  • Review the field activities for new equipment installs, apparatus equipment failures, and to ensure consistency in testing and maintenance practices between service centers. 
  • Be able to provide technical expertise for installation, testing, and maintenance of substation apparatus equipment. 
  • Review new construction projects and scheduled maintenance activities for each service center to ensure adequate resource loading and advising supervisor of any necessary changes. 
  • Research and determine replacement parts for retrofit installations on substation apparatus equipment.
  • Review results and maintain database for Doble power factor testing, oversee oil test results for substation equipment, and make decisions on equipment spares to help maximize system reliability.
  • Review Doble test results and initiate work order repair or replacement for equipment that shows signs of degradation or future failure.
  • Ensure that we have adequate equipment spares for new and existing equipment and determine interchangeability to reduce inventory. 
  • Ensure NERC compliance for substation apparatus equipment.
  • Assist in the development and implementation of on-going analytical and development technologies to support operations, maintenance and replacement decisions.
  • Enhance and utilize current maintenance practices with data analytic tools. 

Position Details


Minimum education requirements include at least a two-year technical degree with focus on electrical construction/maintenance or an electrical engineering degree.  Electric utility related experience in the testing and maintenance of transmission substation apparatus type equipment is highly preferred. Additional technical training related to transmission substation equipment is preferred.

  • Ability to interpret technical test results and understand engineering documentation.
  •  Aptitude and knowledge of working with mechanical type of equipment.
  •  Knowledge of construction and maintenance practices for substations and switching sites.
  •  Knowledge of safety codes and other standards that apply to the construction and maintenance in substations sites.
  •  Knowledge of engineering design documentation and ability to interpret technical drawings, materials, contracts, and other related documentation.
  •  Ability to plan, organize and prioritize time/workload and delegate work in order to accomplish tasks and meet deadlines.
  •  Ability to negotiate and collaborate with others to arrive at a conclusion using compromise, persuasion, rationale, and diplomacy.
  •  Ability to maintain a valid driver’s license.
