The Mitchell Technical Institute Rodeo Team was founded in the fall of 1992. Students interested in rodeo competition, for both men and women, compete individually and as a club team in the National Intercollegiate Rodeo Association (NIRA) representing Mitchell Technical Institute. What are the basic eligibility requirements for college rodeo?
What costs are involved at a college rodeo?
- A student has 4 years of eligibility. The 4 years of eligibility must be used within 6 years of your high school graduation date.
- Pass at least 12 academic semester hours of credit each semester.
- Maintain a 2.0 (C) grade point average.
- Remain a student in good standing at the school in which you are enrolled and the NIRA.
Your NIRA membership, rodeo entry fees, motel, and food expenses. The school assists with some of the travel expenses along with the team through fund raising activities.
How many rodeos are held each school year?
Each of the eleven regions hold a maximum of ten rodeos per year that count towards qualification to the College National Finals Rodeo.
Where are the rodeos located?
MTI is in the Great Plains Region of the NIRA which is North Dakota, South Dakota, Nebraska, Iowa, Wisconsin, and Minnesota.
How is MTI”s “team” determined for a rodeo?
All contestants compete in their individual events. The teams are determined by the coach prior to the stock draw. These team points will be totaled at the end of the rodeo for the team standings. Individual event points will determine separate event standings.
Will I be excused from class to attend college rodeos?
Yes, excused absences are given by MTI through the Rodeo Activities Office for NIRA trips. However, you will be responsible for making arrangements to make up any missed work.
What kind of scholarships are available?
The MTI foundation offers many scholarship opportunities for students. MTI also accepts all scholarships from outside organizations.
The Team Travel scholarship covers travel expenses. Students may potentially be awarded as much as $1,000 per year per contestant to help with travel costs.
