MTI offers a variety of scholarships to qualified applicants. Click here for a list of scholarships. MTI also accepts any scholarships brought in by entering or returning students. Several websites offer lists of scholarships and application processes. REMEMBER: If someone attempts to charge or bill you for a listing of scholarships, chances are it is not a legitimate service. Stay clear of the search services that charge to "find" scholarships for students.

Avera Queen of Peace is a leading supporter and partner of Mitchell Technical Institute.  An endowment was established in 2002 and now provides scholarships each year to MTI's Health Science programs.

The scholarship will be applied to recipient's account the first semester of their second year.

Detail:

David Grode was the Superintendent of Schools at Plankinton, SD.  He was killed in the propane explosion that destroyed the school on November 17, 2000.  In memorial to him, his family has established this scholarship to aid in training Propane & Natural Gas Technology students.  David was also an avid woodworker, therefore his family requests that ADBC students be given the opportunity to apply for this scholarship as well.

The scholarship will be applied to the recipient's account in the Spring semester.

The Gary Plagmann Memorial Scholarship was established by his family in 2011.  Gary was involved in the Telecommunications Industry in South Dakota, Iowa and Minnesota for nearly 40 years and participated in many rural telephone company upgrades during his career.

The first endowed fund for scholarships at Mitchell Technical Institute, the GF Thomsen Family Scholarship has been awarded annually since 1985.  First preference for the scholarship is to dependents of employees of GF Thomsen companies of Mitchell.  If no applicants meet this criteria a Mitchell area high school graduate may receive the scholarship.

The scholarship will be applied to the recipient's account in the Spring semester.

  • Applicant must currently be enrolled as a full-time student at MTI and have completed at least one semester of classes

Mark and Kathy Hofer are avid supporters of MTI's Power Line and Construction program. Mark has served on various electric cooperative boards for several years both on a local and national level. The Hofer's have sponsored this scholarship since 2007.

The award recipient will be selected by the SD Line Superintendents and applications will be available from the MTI Power Line instructors.

Mark and Kathy Hofer began their scholarship support of the Wind Turbine Technology program in 2010.  Mark has served on the National Rural Electric Cooperative Association board and has realized the importance of education to young people.

The Mitchell Area Homebuilder's Association established this scholarship in 2010.

The MTI Alumni Association hosts a golf tournament each September for students currently enrolled at MTI.  Random drawings are held for scholarship funds and prizes.  2011 scholarship awards totaled $5000.  The tourney was scheduled for Monday, Sept. 19, 2011. 

Criteria:

Any student currently enrolled at MTI is eligible to golf for a small registration fee which covers greens fees, cart and lunch.

This scholarship was established by MTI in 2012.  The scholarships will be awarded to any students attending MTI who have a parent, step-parent, grandparent or sibling who has graduated from MTI. 

Criteria:
  • Applicant will be awarded $500 upon verification of family member graduation at MTI
  • Completion of the first year of a two year program with a 2.5 GPA or higher will renew the award for another $500 for the student's second year
  • Application for the MTI Legacy Scholarship should be completed through the Admissions Office at MTI

Details:
These scholarships are provided to first year students enrolled at MTI.  The funding for this scholarship is provided by the contributions to the MTI Foundation by the staff and faculty of Mitchell Technical Institute.  Applications are typically available online mid-February each year to students who have been accepted to MTI.  Recipients will be notified of awards prior to the start of the Fall semester.  All awards will be credited to student accounts for the Fall semester.

  • Applicant must complete the MTI Freshman online application and provide an online reference as instructed to be eligible for the scholarship
  • Applicant must demonstrate financial need as determined by the FAFSA (universal financial aid application form)

The MTI Star Scholarship is a program for those who excel academically.  If you are accepted into an MTI program, have an ACT score of 24 or higher and a high school cumulative GPA of 3.0 or higher, you will automatically be awarded a Star Scholarship.  Choose to enroll in one of MTI's spotlight programs, keep your grades up, and earn another $1,000 for your second year.  (MTI cumulative GPA of 2.5 or higher is required for renewal.)

Muth Electric has been a valued supporter of MTI's Electrical Construction and Maintenance program for several years by providing scholarship funds, supplies and industry support.

The scholarships will be applied during the Spring semester and applications will be handed out by ECM instructors.

Scholarship recipients will be selected by Muth Electric and ECM instructors.

The Myrtle Smith Memorial is funded by a donation from the family and was established for female students in the Secretarial programs.  It will now provide scholarships for female student in the Accounting & Business Management program and the Office Technology Specialist program.

Detail:

The scholarship is available for Native American students currently enrolled at MTI in programs other than WTT who wish to continue their training at MTI in the Wind Turbine Technology program.  Objective is to meet the need for wind industry technicians on tribal lands and the surrounding area.   Priority will be given to students who have already obtained an MTI diploma.  Scholarship committee will solicit recommendation information from program instructors.  

Scholarship will be available for the Spring semester.

  • Applicant must be an enrolled member of a Federally recognized tribe
  • Applicant must be a full-time MTI student not currently enrolled in Wind Turbine Technology
  • Applicant must have successfully completed one semester of study at MTI and attained a  2.5 or higher cumulative GPA

S.D. Line Superintendents provides scholarships for Power Line students to emphasize and support the education of future Power Line workers in South Dakota with the hopes that graduates will pursue a career with Rural Electric Cooperatives in the area.

Applications will be available from Power Line instructors during the Spring semester. 

Recipients will be selected by a committee of Rural Electric Line Superintendent's Association and notified during the Spring semester.

The Topper Largent Memorial Scholarship was established in memory of Agriculture Advisory Board member Topper Largent.  Largent was the manager of the Fall River Feed lot when he and two others were killed in a plane crash near Hot Springs, SD.  The scholarships will be available during the Spring semester and the awards will be presented at graduation.
