Mitchell Technical Institute is accredited byThe Higher Learning Commission, a Commission of the North Central Association of Colleges and Schools.
Mitchell Technical Institute's accreditation was reviewed by a team of peer evaluators who visited the campus March 7-9, 2011. Following the team's recommendation, MTI was approved for continued accreditation by The Higher Learning Commission until 2021. Ten years is the maximum time period for which a school can receive accreditation. MTI has been accredited since 1980.

MTI is currently in the process of applying to achieve initial program accreditation for several more of its technical programs. The MTI Radiation Therapy program is pursuing accreditation with The Joint Review Committee on Education in Radiologic Technology; the Heating and Cooling Technology program is pursuing accreditation with HVAC Excellence; and the Culinary Academy of South Dakota is pursuing accreditation with the American Culinary Federation.
Membership is maintained with many industrial associations, which provide licensing or certification for students.
